The Giant of Florence: The Story of Michelangelo's David

More than five centuries after its unveiling, Michelangelo Buonarroti's David remains one of the most famous artworks in history. The monumental sculpture was unveiled to the people of Florence, Italy, on 8 September 1504. The 17-foot-tall, 5,560-kilogram marble masterpiece is carved from a single block of white Italian Carrara marble and depicts a nude David.
