India’s dairy export opportunity: Can AMF take India global?
India produced 247.87 million tonne of milk in 2024-25, nearly a quarter of global output, yet exports less than 1 per cent. Milk fat is absorbed domestically and exports stay concentrated in ghee rather than neutral industrial AMF. Limited access, food-safety rules and a trader-led model further restrict competitiveness. India needs two engines. First, convert genuine domestic surplus into neutral AMF for markets where geography favours India.
